The entire MIT community was invited to cross the Charles River from Boston to Cambridge, along with more than 30 teams competing for points based on criteria such as creativity, speed, community inclusiveness, expressing the excitement of learning and discovery, and of course, a sense of “only at MIT!” The procession traveled over land and water, showcasing MIT’s storied ingenuity, with Oliver Smoot ’62, in the lead as grand marshal. Special guests will included Ray Magliozzi ’73, cohost of NPR’s popular show, “Car Talk.” The parade paid homage to the spirit of the 1916 ceremonial crossing in which the Bucentaur barge transported the Institute charter across the Charles to MIT’s new home in Cambridge.
